Trakara is a fleet intelligence platform built for Southern Africa — combining GPS and CAN bus telematics, AI-powered dash-cam video, and satellite backup tracking into a single dashboard and mobile app. It's built for commercial fleets running SADC and COMESA corridors, and for private vehicle owners who want the same tracking and stolen-vehicle recovery capability.
Coverage spans the SADC and COMESA regions, with automatic roaming across member-state mobile networks at every border crossing. Named corridors include the Great North Road, North-South Corridor, Trans-Kalahari, Tanzam, Nacala Corridor, and routes through Kasumbalesa, Beit Bridge, and the Copperbelt.
Where cellular coverage genuinely ends — remote stretches with no towers nearby — satellite backup tracking can keep reporting positions, so a vehicle is never truly out of sight. Satellite backup is an optional add-on and isn't included by default; see below for details.
On standard plans without the satellite add-on, a loss of cellular signal doesn't mean lost data — the tracker keeps recording position, trip, and sensor history locally on the device, with roughly a month of onboard storage. The moment cellular signal is restored, the full backlog of records is sent through automatically, so your trip history stays complete even though it wasn't live during the gap.
With the satellite backup add-on enabled, the tracker instead fails over to satellite connectivity in real time, which doesn't depend on ground towers, so visibility continues live through the most remote, isolated sections of a corridor run rather than catching up afterwards.

A rugged tracker unit built for harsh African road conditions, connected directly to the vehicle's CAN bus for accurate engine, fuel, and diagnostic data. Trailers and other unpowered assets can run low-power tracking units designed for long battery life.
Installation is done by trained technicians using standard, non-invasive CAN bus access points, the same approach used by OEM telematics and insurance black-box providers. It reads data — it doesn't alter engine or safety system behaviour, unless a fleet specifically opts into features like remote immobilisation, which is a separate, clearly configured function.
Yes. Trailer and asset units are designed to run independently of the towing vehicle's power, with low-power modes built specifically to extend battery life when a trailer is disconnected or stationary for long periods.
Three categories, on every trip: cabin-facing (distraction, phone use, drowsiness, seatbelt use), road-facing (tailgating, lane drift, sign and light violations), and vehicle sensors (harsh braking, hard acceleration, harsh cornering, rollover events). Footage is recorded and stored in the cloud, with live streaming available on demand.
Footage is searchable, which makes it useful for both directions — clearing a driver in a false claim as much as flagging genuine risk. It's primarily intended for driver safety, cargo protection, and dispute resolution rather than continuous surveillance for its own sake.
No. The same tracking backbone is offered as a consumer plan for private vehicles, including real-time location from a mobile app, panic-button alerts, geofencing for home, work, school runs and curfews, and stolen-vehicle recovery with rapid-response coordination.
Yes. Trakara supplies usage-based insurance (UBI) data feeds and driver risk scoring to support insurer underwriting and premium models, along with automated First Notice of Loss (FNOL) alerts triggered after an incident.
If a vehicle is reported stolen or moves outside an authorised zone, Trakara's tracking and AI video capability coordinate with a rapid-response process aimed at locating and recovering the vehicle as quickly as possible.

Trakara runs on its own integrated hardware and platform rather than layering on top of another provider's units, since the CAN bus integration, satellite fallback, and AI video all depend on Trakara-configured devices. Switching over is handled as part of onboarding.
